What you'll learn.

  • What is dreamwork
  • Types of dreams
  • Dreamwork approaches

Recent neuroscientific findings suggest that dreams are related to the limbic system and emotional processing in the brain. During REM sleep, when most dreaming occurs, there is increased activity in the limbic system and other regions associated with emotion processing. Research also suggests the brain engages in self-related and internally generated processing during dreaming, particularly in the visual and sensory areas. This internal processing may help consolidate memories, process emotions, and integrate new experiences with existing knowledge.

Contemporary psychoanalysis suggests dreams play an important role in the psyche — serving to re-integrate and re-structure the integrity of the psyche and allowing us to process unconscious conflicts, emotions, and desires. In this view, dreams offer a window into the unconscious mind and can help us gain insight into our innermost thoughts and feelings.
